Portrait of Wong Sze Wing by Kyle Fowlie

My Bio:

Hello, my name is Sze Wing Wong. I was born and raised in Hong Kong, but now living in Orono, Maine and studying at the University of Maine. I major in New Media and minor in Film& Video.

Before I came to the United States, I studied Digital Visual Design in a community college and had a few work experiences in graphic design firm and photography studio. The pursuing of aesthetic in visual design and making things better are always the first thing in my mind, therefore I really enjoy and thankful I could work on what I truly interested in. Having a chance to study aboard and see overseas creativity are also great and memorable experiences for me.

I am that kind of person who can’t stand boredom and doing something repeatedly. So leave aside of study, in my spare time, I went hiking a lot when I was in Hong Kong, stood on the peak looking at my beautiful hometown. I used to taking a camera with me and explore the city too, there are still many secret and enchanting places I haven’t yet visit. Watching movies and discuss them with friends are also my favourite activities, as I think good movies could inspire people a lot and worthy to be appreciated.

Besides technical interests and skills, I played piano since I was seven. Music has changed me a lot such as mending my bad temper and relaxing the tension I have in everyday life. I currently self-learning guitar and film editing, and the progress is doing quite well. I hope I could bring these two skills into full play in my film& video minor.

Creative Statement:

What brings my all the way to University of Maine to study new media is a long story. But in each story there’s always a person or a thing as a turning point, in mine, it’s a camera from my uncle.

It was about 5 years ago, I borrowed a DSLR camera from my uncle in order to finish a school assignment, and that camera changed my whole life. I totally fell in love with photography, image and visual creation after that assignment, but I was still not familiar with using the dslr by that time, so my uncle he taught me everything he knew about photography skills; since then, I couldn’t live without a camera. This had also stimulated my interest on visual communication; I started to realize that I had something to tell, I wanted to say something through a picture, or to tell a story visually. So after all the years, I am here.

On the other hand of still image, I am looking for something new and other alternative ways to express my thoughts and ideas, the first thing I came up with is moving image. The production behind a short film or a movie is a mysterious thing to me, so I am trying to get myself closer to this field. I started watching behind the scenes of a movie I finished, reading movie reviews and trying to make footages about my everyday life as a first attempt of filming.

I wish I could accomplish a set of multimedia works (might be a collage of graphic design, still and moving image) about people, inter-relationship and love in the soon future. The exploration of the relationship between one another never has an end and it is always a fascinating topic or story to talk about. There’s a word “Yuen Fun” in Chinese, which means every tiny incidence, twists and turns that brought people together. It’s it a beautiful thing?
